Various Armies update

So, this is my first post in about a month and I have been making small bits of progress in painting up models for Eldar, Dark Eldar, Blood Angels and Chaos Space Marines.

First, I've now finished two full tactical squads and bits of three other Blood Angel squads (Assault, Death Company and Sanguinary Guard). I'll eventually get round to adding vehicles and whatnot once a new codex comes out for them
Secondly, here are a couple of models from a 10-man box of Dire Avengers (Eventually, I will get round to having a battle-ready Eldar army).
Third, here are some green Dark Eldar Kabalite Warriors (this time I applied a green wash last. The next unit/ vehicles will have a dark green wash applied at an earlier stage)
Fourth, I'm also doing up a unit of Chaos Space Marines that will be aligned to Slaanesh (with an icon of excess, to show that it's not just Nurgle's followers that can benefit from FNP!)
Finally, I got four more boxes of Dark Eldar - a Raider, 2 boxes of Scourges (One unit will be anti-vehicle and the other will be anti-infantry) and a Talos Pain Engine. I should also get my hands on some more Dark Eldar and Blood Angels in the next week or two.

New Tyranid Zoanthropes

So, as you lot are aware, the Tyranids saw the recent release of the all-plastic kit that can be used to make Venomthropes and Zoanthropes. I ended up buying two boxes, in order to make up two units of three, rather than make one unit of six, as I want to try to destroy more enemy units/ vehicles per turn. I will eventually get a third box, to make up a unit of Venomthropes, to try and make gaunts a bit more survivable.

Well, without further ado, I present a couple of images showing the new Zoanthropes (one of which was built up as a Neurothrope), as well as a comparison in size between a plastic Zoanthrope and a Finecast one.

I will soon get around to the second Zoanthrope unit, which has a different colour scheme (green & purple).

New Necron Heavy Destroyer unit

Well, I've finally had some time to finish building and painting a little project for my Necrons - a second all-plastic unit of Necron Heavy Destroyers. It also gave me a chance to see what Necrons would look like with a purple colour scheme. These are partial conversion jobs, as the first heavy gauss cannon was made from Immortals' gauss blasters and a gauss cannon and the other two were heavy gauss cannons from the Triarch Stalker kit (it's getting the heat ray and will also be painted purple!).

Here's the end result!
For the textured base, I used a pot of Tamiya dark earth textured paint I got a week or two ago when I last went to Edinburgh.

Secondly, I will also see to changing some of the plastic rods on some of my Necron warriors, as a little package arrived today! Three 50cm lengths of 2.4mm clear coloured plastic rod (red, yellow and blue), which is the same thickness as the green rods used on the gauss flayers and old Immortal gauss blasters.

Finally, beware of evil cows that may have chaotic tendencies, as I caught Clive (clad in black robes) in the presence of an icon of Chaos! Will he summon something demonic?

Necron re-basing project and a purple meanie!

So, last week I got my hands on some of the often out of stock 32mm round bases that people have been using to re-base Space Marines and Necrons on and I got 6 packs of 10. These bases were used for putting Necron Warriors on and when I am able to get about another 60 or so, I can put the rest of the Necrons foot-sloggers on them (apart from the new Overlord lording it on a 40mm base).

Personally, I think the new 32mm bases work very well for the Necrons, as there are times where the feet of some of the models stick out quite a bit when on 25mm bases. This has also led me to use another box for the models (one of the GW boxes they gave out to people who spent at least £100 in-store). I also had to get on with that, seeing as though my Necrons will have their first battle using the new codex on Sunday.

Another thing with my Necrons is that any new units will be painted using the purple colour scheme I used when painting my newest heavy destroyer unit. An example of this is in the following picture showing this new colour scheme, as well as the difference going from a 25mm base to a 32mm base makes for a Necron warrior.

Finally, I did mention that I got several lengths of transparent coloured rod for replacing the green clear rod on some warriors. Unfortunately, I have found that replacing the green rod with another colour involved quite a bit of the guns apart. This means that I'm going to have to be very careful on how to go ahead with that project.

Skaven - initial models

So, as with the advent of the End Times book, I ended up deciding to give building/ painting Skaven a go, while running through ideas of what kind of colour scheme to use. Eventually, I decided to go for a scheme involving greens, with Incubi Darkness as the main colour and lighter greens such as Kabalite Green as the secondary. I've done up a couple of models to show this colour scheme that should work (after washing with Agrax Earthshade as an end touch) and here we are:

On other fronts, I am getting closer to completion of a Necron Tesseract Vault super-heavy vehicle, which I am planning to use for a big battle on Sunday, March 1st. The main armour colour being Naggaroth Night (dark purple) and the secondary being blue, which is also how I'm painting up the Transcendent C'Tan in the middle. In terms of progress, I just have to finish off the C'Tan and fix up the outer sections to the main section. As well as that, I also got my hands on another 50 32mm bases for putting more Necrons on to, such as Praetorians and Immortals.

So, I have just finished building the big Necron super-heavy model known as the Tesseract Vault, containing the Transcendent C'Tan. As mentioned earlier, The main body colour was painted Naggaroth Night, with the C'Tan painted with several blues, starting from Altdorf blue, then Hoeth blue and Skink blue for highlighting. This means that this model is pretty much ready for battle, apart from having to find a box to put the thing in.

Here is the finished model, with a Necron Immortal to show the scale of the model.

Toxicrene and some Blood Angel Dreadnoughts

So, it has been a while since my last post, having been busy with work and other things (mainly Necron, as I had a Necron battle coming up and wanted to get the Decurion detachment up and running). I have, however, finished up some of the models that were laying about in limbo for a while, notably the Tyranid Toxicrene and three Blood Angel dreadnoughts.

First, here is a green/ purple Toxicrene. This model looks a bit unusual, as I lot a little part used to keep one set of its tentacles in place and ended up with it being in limbo for a while. My workaround was just to put as much of the arm into the body and glue that in place.

Next, here are the Blood Angel Death Company, Librarian and Furioso dreadnoughts, which will form the main parts of a dreadnought quadrangle, as I will have to build up a normal dreadnought for a Battle Company formation. I ended up getting a Venerable dreadnought kit (not built yet), as that had quite a few weapon arms that will be used for that dreadnought and a couple of venerable dreadnoughts that had the bodies but not the arms - they will join the ranks of the Dark Angels eventually.
Finally, what's coming up? Well, there should be some more Necron, CSM and Blood Angel pictures coming in the future, along with Skaven for models to make those armies up and there will also be the CSM super-heavy, the Lord of Skulls. This is also relevant, as I should be getting my hands on the new Chaos Daemonkin codex in a few days and will have a way of fielding CSM's and daemons in one codex.

Zoanthropes, Venomthropes and a Lord of Skulls

So, I have a big 40k battle coming up this Sunday, involving a super-heavy vehicle and I decided that I will use the Lord of Skulls, the big Khorne thingy that also features in the Daemonkin codex and it will battle alongside other Chaos Space Marines. It is now built (the paintwork may need a bit more touching up) and I also used it to try out the colour scheme for my Daemonkin CSM's - black with red trim.

I have also got round to getting some Tyranid models done up, having left them for a few months and there is now a built up unit of three green/ purple Venomthropes and five green/ purple Zoanthropes. The next models on the construction plan are two Tyrannocytes (Nid drop pods) to go with them.

Hopefully, the Lord of Skulls will make it through the battle without being destroyed (difficult to consider when there will be D-weapons going about) and I will soon get my Tyranids up to a battle ready state numbers-wise. Until next time!

Beware Tyranids dropping out of the sky!

So, after quite a while, I finally got round to building up two Tyranid 'drop pods' aka Tyrannocytes. They are quite big models, each armed with five Deathspitters but unlike drop pods, they can still float about. One of them is red with green carapace and the other is green with purple carapace. This is because I have two colour schemes for my Tyranids. Now, once I get the main troop units done (Three or four units of 20-25 Termagants, two units of 15-20 Genestealers and a unit of Tyranid Warriors), I can get to bringing them out to battle.
Here are the models (Some final touching up may be needed on the paint jobs)

1st Skitarii model done & Tzeentchian Sorcerer Lord

So, having finally settled on what colour scheme I would be using for the Skitarii models, I got round to painting the first one - the Alpha model (squad leader) for a unit of Rangers. I ended up deciding on purple for the cloaks, medium green for the overalls and a bright green for some pipes/ tubes. I've yet to come up with a forge world symbol but I would probably use something with the letter M, as I decided that the forge world they are affiliated with would be called 'Murasaki'. This is appropriate, as 'murasaki' is the Japanese word for purple. Alternatively, it could be a forge world called 'Midori' (Japanese for green). Of course, I used Martian Ironearth crackle paint for the base.

Here is the end result.

Finally, I got my hands on the assassins game 'Assassinorum Execution Force' however many weeks ago and I recently finished building the Sorcerer lord who is meant to be the main character. I ended up painting him blue and yellow, as I thought I would not do the model up as the story suggested, but do him up in a Tzeentchian colour scheme, as a warm-up in case they end up releasing a Tzeentch version of the Chaos Daemonkin codex.

New Assault Marines & some Blood Angel characters

In building up my two main Space Marine armies, my plan is to have as a backbone, one full battle company for each one (Blood Angel and Dark Angel). I have recently got the last marines to do up the 6 tactical squads for each one and it will require that I get models for the Assault and Devastator squads. So, I am making plans for two such squads of each type for each army and recently, I got the new Assault marines box. They have been painted up as a 5-man Dark Angel half assault squad, equipped with a power fist sergeant, two plasma pistols and an eviscerator. I will get more of these boxes later, but here's what they look like:

For the Blood Angels, I recently finished two characters - a Captain, with a couple of bits from the BA upgrade sprue and I also created a Terminator Librarian out of a Grey Knight Terminator.

One other plan this week will be to get the new Dark Angels codex and re-organise my army and create a grav-weapon armed tactical squad (grav cannon, grav gun and combi-grav), as Dark Angels will finally get their hands on graviton weapons.

So, that's all for the moment!

A grey Riptide

So, here is a model that I have recently finished building/ painting - A Tau Riptide armed with ion accelerator, twin fusion blaster & two support systems, accompanied by two shielded missile drones.
This model and me will soon be parted, as I painted it for someone, with grey/ grey-blue colour scheme.

For the bases, I used the GW white texture paint and some static grass/ grass-like texture paint, to show a snowy environment where some of the snow has melted - just to try something out/ break the white areas up a bit.

This involved trying out painting models in a grey colour scheme, as well as finding that getting the Tau circular symbol to look lit up can be a bit difficult but I suppose it is good to try doing some different colour schemes to what I usually do.

Blood Angels, Dark Angels and Stormcast Eternals

So, there is light at the end of the tunnel, in terms of completing the Blood Angel and Dark Angel battle companies, as I have now finished six tactical squads for each, just about finished two devastator squads for each and just have the assault marines and other extras to do.

I have also had a thought about doing up a second Ravenwing bike squad, with both special weapon guys armed with grav guns and a sergeant armed with a thunder hammer. Here is a simple conversion I did to give the two main bikers the grav guns. The sergeant will come later, once he is built and painted.

Finally, I got my hands on the Age of Sigmar box recently and have started doing up the Stormcast Eternal models. I decided on golden armour with purple, as per the Lions of Sigmar, as I do tend to have quite a few other models with purple on them (Tyranids & Necrons!). The dull gold effect was attempted by painting the armour in Leadbelcher, then washing with Seraphim Sepia - an effect I have used on other models over the past few years (blame the Sanguinary Guard!)

Purple Mechanical Destroyer Meanies

So, I've now got one lot of Adeptus Mechanicus models built up and mostly painted (some finishing touches will be needed), in the form of a Cult Mechanicus Elimination Maniple - 2 units of Kataphron Destroyers and a unit of Kastelan robots. The destroyers have one unit equipped with heavy grav-cannons and the other with plasma culverins.

The other purple mechanical meanie that's built & painted is an overhaul of my Necron Destroyer Lord, as he was kind of falling to bits. This is a partial conversion, comprising of a Destroyer chassis and an Overlord torso from the Catacomb Command Barge kit and a full repaint job from blue to purple. Here are the before and after pictures.

Finally, with all that done, I can probably get on with finishing off the last bits of my Land Raider for the Dark Angels vehicle formation, as well as work on the Stormcast Eternals, Skaven and Skitarii.

A couple more purple models & first unit of CSM's

$

So, I have tried out an idea of what colour scheme I will use for Tzeentchian Chaos Space Marines when we see either a new CSM or the long-rumoured Tzeentch Daemonkin codex. I ended up deciding on purple armour with a bronze trim, as shown on the demonstration model below (aka a Thousand Son). I didn't go for the normal blue/ yellow colours, as I wanted something different. (Perhaps a final wash of Nuln Oil may make the model look a bit better).

Next, the second purple miniature is a Skitarii Ironstrider Ballistarius armed with a twin-linked lascannon, At times, the model was a pain in the ass to build but I think that may have been down to the glue I was using taking time to set properly before I could glue the next parts on. I will plan to have another one or two of these models alongside it, to provide some long-range fire for this faction.

Finally, I have now built the first Chaos Space Marine unit that will serve my Khorne Daemonkin army. It is a ten man squad, all on 32mm bases, as I wanted two models armed with meltaguns and an eight man unit will only let you have one such gun. The champion is armed with a power fist. The colour scheme is black armour with a red trim, as it seemed a bit different,

I also bought a box of Bloodletter lesser daemons of Khorne to act as either a main unit or a summoned unit and I am thinking of putting the little daemons on 32mm bases, rather than the traditional 25mm bases. The reason for this was that I noticed that the model holding the banner does not seem too steady on the 25mm base, as the banner is so blasted big & relatively heavy that it tips over very easily. I am wondering if putting that model on a 32mm base may make that situation any better and I will put the other models of that unit on 32mm bases for consistency.

Skitarii & another found wandering the Martian Ironearth

So, that's a second vehicle and two assault units done for my Skitarii - an Onager Dunecrawler, a unit of Sicarian Ruststalkers and a unit of Sicarian Infiltrators. As usual, they are done up with all purple for the vehicle and purple & green for the infantry.

The Dunecrawler will need the base finished off and with the two Sicarian units, I did the bases differently - one unit had the textured paint and the other the crackle paint.

Finally, I had a little try of a rust-coloured weathering powder on a Dark Angels Land Raider, which is part of my Hammer of Caliban formation (Techmarine, Land Raider & 3 Predators). This was a first attempt at trying this out and I think I have to finish it off by spraying a varnish to keep the dust on the model.

Well, that's all for the moment.

Chaos Helbrute and first Death Guard models

$

I recently decided to partake of the Horus Heresy era models and deliberated over what legion to go with. I ended up going with the Death Guard, as the colour scheme looked simple enough and I have used their 40k successors, Plague Marines, a lot in Chaos Space Marine armies. So, my first order was for 15 legion infantry (10 guys in mark 2 and 5 guys in Mark 4 armour) and the praetors set, just to get started.

Well, that's half of a pre-Heresy Death Guard unit done. 5 guys in Mk II armour with a sergeant armed with a bolt pistol & power fist (the power fist came from parts of the Kataphron battle servitors, which I built up as 6 destroyers). In line with what I have done with 40k Space Marines & Chaos, all of my regular power armour guys will be on 32mm bases, not 25mm. One intent was that the models were to have an intentionally dirty appearance, which is why I did not paint the armour white - instead, I painted up the main armour off-white.

Here is a picture showing the first five models.

The second set of five models will finish the first squad and the third set will form a plasma gun-armed support squad (in Mk IV armour). I will also see how stripping paint off of Forgeworld models using Dettol works, as I bought another ten marines with bolters that were painted green (planned as Sons of Horus models?).

Finally, one kit that I have had for a while and only now got round to building and painting is the non-Dark Vengeance Helbrute. This one is painted with black armour, red trim and green skin and is planned to represent some mechanical fire/ CC support to my Khorne Daemonkin CSM's.

This model is equipped with a twin-linked lascannon for long-range shooting and a power fist with heavy flamer to deal with closer opposition.

Some more progress on Horus Heresy Death Guard

$

Well, that's most of my inital collection of Horus Heresy Death Guard models built and painted, in the form of a 10 man tactical squad, a 5 man tactical support squad and two Praetors. There is one 10 man unit that is pending, which will be made into a regular tactical squad but will take a bit longer to do, as I bought the models from someone and have to disassemble them first before painting them up. ( I am one of those who prefers to paint, then build.)

The models do have a dirty appearance which is deliberate, as that seems to be in keeping with with the pictures I have seen of Death Guard marines in the Horus Heresy books.

So, here are some pictures.

The 'power fists' on some of the models were arms taken from the Cult Mechanicus Kataphron Battle Servitor kits.

One unit I've almost finished is a 10 man Tau breacher squad, along with a smart missile system turret that will be associated with a Fire Warrior squad. This was bought in the run up to the slightly updated Tau codex. Also, I will eventually get around to building up the Stormsurge Gargantuan creature model and get my hands on the new Tau Commander battlesuit model this weekend.

Death Guard (continued)

So, in the past week and a bit, I saw an opportunity to build up infantry more readily for my pre-Heresy Death Guard with the HH: Betrayal at Calth box set and bought two boxes, giving me lots of models (and special. close combat & heavy weapons).

Firstly, here are a couple of plastic Contemptor Dreadnoughts, both of which have involved conversion jobs. The power fist on one of them has been altered with the built-in bolter replaced with a meltagun. On the other dreadnought, I turned a multi-melta the other way round, to have a dreadnought with two guns.

Next, here is most of a tactical support squad armed with melta guns. This time I did not need to borrow a Mechanicus cyborg or robot arm for a power fist.

Finally, here is the first model of a 5-man Cataphractii Terminator unit. The unit will have 2 power fists, 2 chain fists and one guy with a pair of lightning claws.

Don't worry, there will be quite a few models left to go and I might also re-paint & re-base some CSM Plague marines (in pre-heresy DG colours and on 32mm bases).

Death Guard progress update - with vehicles this time

$

0
So, I have got most of the planned infantry done for my 30k Death Guard army, with all tactical and veteran tactical squads numbering no less than 10 models per unit and the tactical support squads between 5 and 7 models in size. I just need to get the last few models in those units done, along with the heavy weapon guys (1 unit with missile launchers and 1 unit with lascannons) to finish that part of the army off.

Two additions that have diverted my attention away from finishing off the infantry are in the form of two out of four vehicles that will be added to their roster. Here, I present a Vindicator and a Phobos Land Raider.
The Vindicator has a twin bolter from a Cataphractii Terminator kit and the dirty areas at the bottom were achieved by using Typhus Corrosion and some drybrushing with browns.

You may notice that the heavy bolters and lascannon sponsons may look a bit unusual for the Land Raider. That was due to an error in an order, where I received a Land Raider Crusader/ Redeemer kit, instead of the normal Land Raider kit (the Crusader/ Redeemer kit does not have any lascannons or heavy bolters, although it does have a multi-melta and a frag assault launcher option). I was able to get that fixed by using twin-linked lascannon and heavy bolter sets from Razorbacks. The dirty effects were achieved by using Typhus Corrosion on the tracks, followed by drybrushing with Ryza Rust and dark brown weathering powder on the hull.
I am working on Skitarii models at the moment, as I have enough models to build two battle maniples of purple and green soldiers and the other two Death Guard vehicles will be a super-heavy tank (Shadowsword/ Baneblade) and a second Land Raider Phobos.

Finally, I ended up having a use for one of two Cataphractii Terminator captains (as I got two Betrayal at Calth boxes). I painted one of them up in red and he will be joining my Blood Angel 40k army as a Terminator captain.
